… the nights are drawing in.
As the days get shorter, at least some of your towing might be at the start or the end of the day, when there’s less light. Visibility in reduced light is more difficult for all drivers.

For anyone who is towing as the light fades, you might want to think about how well other road users can see you and your trailer when you’re out on manoeuvres.

As the light dwindles our ability to see the road ahead also declines – contrast fades, colours fade and edges become indistinct. Other road users need all the help you can give them.

We took this picture a couple of years ago.
The T-Sign on the side of the car stands out really clearly in the darkness.

What about the boat behind it?  Did you even notice it? Most people don’t, or at least, not until it’s pointed out to them.  The T-Sign alerts you to the fact that there’s more to this car than immediately meets the eye ...

Even in the best conditions the abilty of other drivers to assess the speed and position of oncoming vehicles is reduced at night. If you’re emerging at a junction, on a roundabout, or even overtaking on the motorway then not only are other drivers less able to assess your speed and where exactly you are, they're going to find it even harder to know that you're "bigger than you look".

Earlier in the year, I sat next to a lady at a social gathering. Quite spontaneously she mentioned that the previous weekend, she had been driving back from her daughters, on the motorway, in the dark. She was overtaken by a car. She also wanted to overtake as soon as it was safe. She watched the car go past, and was about to pull out, when she realised that the car had a long, unloaded trailer behind it.  There had been no warning, no way that she would have known. T-Signs would have alerted her.

Has anyone who reads this blog had a similar experience?  What driving do you do as it gets dark?   How do other drivers respond?

Remember the ads –be seen, be safe. True for towers too!
